Aphrodite - A Sonnet

by Meghna Mathur

Aphrodite strikes when no one sees

With the strength of a tiger she prepares

To craft a reverie of tragedies,

But, once you are in her clutch, you cannot dare

To run to the fields of nonchalance,

For, she will pull you like a dog on a leash,

There is no return from this bewitching trance,

To her lover: War, she will take you for niche;

A fly drowning in the syrup it craves

Would rather die than be parted away,

For the Goddess knows we are Fear's slaves,

And to combat loneliness we would slay,

So, please Goddess show me compassion,

And till me that my end will have passion.
